Setting Up Your Indoor Cycle

We're going to tackle two of the questions that we're most commonly asked:
1) How easy is it to assemble an indoor cycle?
2) Is this indoor cycle suitable for someone of my height?

How easy is it to assemble an indoor cycle?

How easy is it to assemble an indoor cycle?Whilst all indoor cycles are slightly different in their construction, the assembly process is very similar for all bikes. Full assembly instructions and required tools are included with all bikes, and if you're not confident with spanners then we can assemble the cycle for you. If you do want to assemble the indoor cycle yourself then the following steps offer you a good indication of what's involved:

1) Unpack the indoor cycle, ensuring that all components needed to complete the assembly are included in the box. Check all packaging thoroughly because smaller parts can often be hiding away unseen.

2) You'll see that the main part of the cycle - the frame, cranks and flywheel - are preassembled. Take care when handling this section as it's the heaviest part and it's generally safer to have an extra pair of hands to help out.

3) You'll need to attach the stabiliser bars - these are the bars that sit on the floor - to the indoor cycle. They're usually attached with 2 bolts. The easiest way of attaching these bars is to fit the rear first by having an assistant hold the front of the cycle to stop it from falling, and by lifting the rear of the bike to allow you to attach the bar and to tighten the securing nuts. Once the rear stabiliser bar is securely in place you can attach the front bar - remember that the front is the heaviest end of the indoor cycle because of the flywheel and so take care when lifting it to attach the bar. We often tip the bike completely upright so that it's resting on the seat post and the rear stabiliser bar - this makes fitting the front stabiliser much easier.

4) Now that the cycle is stable you can start to fit the other components. There's no right order to do this in, but we generally follow the same pattern as below.

5) Insert the seat post and attach the seat to the post (where this is not already pre-assembled). Don't worry about the seat height and vertical adjustment - you can sort this out when the bike is complete - but do ensure that the seat is securely clamped in position and is horizontal.

6) Insert the handlebar post and attach the handlebars to the indoor cycle. Again, don't worry too much about the horizontal/vertical positions - this can be adjusted later.

7) Attach the pedal to the pedal arms. You must make sure that you attach the left hand pedal to the left hand pedal arm and the right hand pedal to the right hand pedal arm. If you don't then you'll damage the thread on the pedal arm (and this generally isn't covered by the manufacturer's warranty).

8) Where fitted, attach the console.

9) The indoor cycle is now assembled and you should have no parts remaining!! Check that the bike feels secure and stable before attempting to ride.

Is this indoor cycle suitable for someone of my height?Now that your indoor cycle is assembled you're ready to set the bike up to suit your height and desired riding position. This also gives us a good opportunity to address the question of which bikes are suitable for people of differing heights.

The way to find the right seat height on the indoor cycle is to stand upright, place your hand on the top of your hip bone with your palm facing the floor. Now ask an assistant to measure the distance from your palm to the floor - this will give you the approximate seat height.

If you're still deciding which indoor cycle to buy and you're concerned about whether a particular cycle will be too big or small then you can use the following table to check whether your bike of choice will be suitable for you. If you've already got your indoor cycle and just want to get riding then skip to the part after this table:

Get ready to rideNow that you have your seat at the correct height, the rest of the set up on your indoor cycle is all about making you comfortable when riding. The following steps will set the bike up in approximately the right position, but you can then fine tune this position to achieve your own optimum set up.

Firstly, position the seat in the mid position using the horizontal adjustment. Now adjust the handlebars such that you can reach them comfortably from your seated position. Make sure that you're relaxed; your back is straight and that you have a slight bend in your elbows when holding the handlebars. Bear in mind that there are a number of different places to grip the handlebars - just pick the position that you feel most comfortable with. Make sure that you're sitting towards the back of the seat - this is the most padded part of the seat and you'll find this the most comfortable position. Finally, locate your feet in the pedals and make sure that you feel stable and comfortable, making any fine adjustments in the set up to achieve the optimum position.

Once you've got a cycling position that is comfortable, make a note of the positions on the seat post and handlebar post (most indoor cycles have numbers on the posts to mark the different heights). For those cycles that don't have numbered positions, use a marker pen on the posts to highlight your adjustment position.
